Generally great products look good and have a good physical feel. If a knife is too light for you, or if your peppar mill is too small it cannot be effective for your purposes.
We like things that look clean, are well made and give the impression they will last for years. The ornate and flashy tools tend not to be around too long. Good tools in general should not be time period sensitive.
