With apples falling of almost every single tree, it seems like a good idea to take advantage of the nice crop. Why not make apple sauce? It's easy and quick to make, versatile and goes with so many things. We don't actually can our apple sauce, instead we keep it in the fridge for about a week, or freeze it in which case it stays for a long time.
This is a very general recipe, feel free to alter the amounts depending on your taste and the kind of apples you have available. Some are sweeter than others and the consistency is different too! Ingredients: - About 8 smallish apples (we used green, pretty tart ones from a nearby tree)
- 1/3 cup of sugar
- 1/2 tsp cinnamon
- 1 tsp vanilla
- water
Method:
Peel the apples however you prefer (we like a bit of texture in our sauce, so we peeled the apples in stripes, leaving some of the peel on. However if you want a completely smooth sauce, then make sure to completely peel all the apples.) Remove the core, cut them in chunks, put in a pot along with the sugar and some water.
Let simmer for a while until broken up, then take out a potato smasher and smash the apples. Add water to taste (we added about 2 cups to make a looser sauce), as well as cinnamon and vanilla and let simmer for a few more minutes. Let cool before putting in the fridge or freezer.
Enjoy either on its own, with a bit of cream, with platskis, on crepes, or on yogurt to mention a few options!
