A tuna melt sandwich can be so delicious if it is done right. Creamy tuna and melted cheese dripping down on hearty bread will make anyone hungry. So how do you make a really nice tuna melt sandwich?
Step 1: First of all, you need to start out with a good tuna salad. Our recipe for tuna salad gets some crunch from celery, red onion and apple and contains a good amount of spices. It's tasty and flavorful and perfect for a tuna melt. Step 2: Next, roast your bread. Since the tuna salad is most likely a little wet, it can make the bread a slightly soggy if the bread is too soft to begin with. So toast some good bread in the toaster – we prefer a nice hearty wheat bread. Step 3: Spoon a generous amount of tuna salad on top of your toasted bread and top with slices of a good melting cheese. Here you could use cheddar, mozzarella, provolone, or Monterey Jack to mention a few. Make sure to add a generous amount of cheese. Step 4: Place your sandwich under the broiler – and not simply in a hot oven. You don't want to cook the tuna, you simply want to brown the cheese. This will be done in about 5 minutes, depending on how hot your broiler is and how far down in the oven your pan is located.
Serve with a nice green salad on the side or a warm bowl of soup.
