This recipe is both expensive as well as very high in calories. While Challah bread is generally considered the optimal bread for French toast, it could be replaced with a nice, thick sliced white country bread or potato bread. Challah is not only expensive, but also difficult to find in many areas. It should be noted that cranberries will most likely be more expensive when they are out of season. If they are very expensive in your store, they can probably be replaced with some other slightly tart ingredient such as cherries or rasberries.

8 ounces of cream cheese for 4 people, brings up the calorie content slightly. This seems to produce quite a lot of French Toast, so this recipe could probably feed up to 6 people, thereby bringing down the cost as well as the calories per serving.
